McDonald's to Launch 'McPlant' Burger As Part of New Plant-Based Menu Overhaul

McDonald’s confirmed it will soon test its own plant-based protein in key markets next year, CNN reported. The McPlant can be used in burgers, breakfast sandwiches and other items, People reported.

“McPlant is crafted exclusively for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s,” Ian Borden, McDonald’s international president, said at a virtual investor meeting on Monday, according to USA Today. “In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken-substitutes and breakfast sandwiches.”

The fast-food restaurant giant also revealed plans for a new Crispy Chicken Sandwich, which will become available early next year, CNBC reported.

“Beef. It’s how we made our name,” McDonald’s said in a blog post on Monday. “Based on what we learned and an encouraging response, we’re excited to give you a sneak preview of the McPlant -- a delicious plant-based burger crafted for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s, and with the kind of craveable McDonald’s flavor our customers love."

The company said it began testing its first plant-based burger last year in Canada, following the lead of fast-food rival chains Burger King and Dunkin' in joining the plant-based trend, CNN reported. Burger King launched the Impossible Whopper in 2019, using a plant-based patty manufactured by Impossible Foods.

Carl’s Jr., Del Taco and other chains also added plant-based items to their menus last year, USA Today reported.

The patties for McDonald’s were made by Beyond Meat, which sells meatless products. McDonald’s said that it will make its own plant-based products, which caused shares of Beyond Meat to tumble.
